Local events worth saving

The Curry Coastal Pilot /

At the beginning of this summer, we wrote an editorial lauding the efforts of the volunteers, organizers and businesses that host the many summertime festivals and events that add spice to our community life.

It sadden us to report last week that two such events andndash; Brookings' monthly Second Saturday Art Walk and the Saturday Farmers and Artisans Market at the Port of Brookings Harbor andndash; were in danger of losing their leadership or even closing for good.

Since then, two individual parties have stepped forward to lay claim to and continue the Saturday market. We are pleased to see an interest in keeping it going.

As for the Art Walk, there's a rumor of that several people may take over the event when the current organizers step down after Oct. 13. This is one rumor we hope comes true!

Without such festivals, life on the Oregon Coast andndash; for locals and visitors alike andndash; would be a little less spectacular, a lot less special.

And then there's the money factor.

Each event attracts hundreds and often thousands of visitors to our fair coast, who, in turn, spend money at local shops, motels and restaurants. Additionally, local artisans earn much-needed income selling their products, while local charities gain public awareness and, hopefully, donations.

For budget-conscious residents, most of the festivals are free and offer opportunities for high quality, yet inexpensive, entertainment. There's no need to drive elsewhere andndash; and pay the $4 a gallon gas prices to get there.

Summer is festival season on the Southern Oregon Coast andndash; and we hope it will remain so.
