Festival season has begun!

The Curry Coastal Pilot

The summer festival season on the Southern Oregon Coast begins today with the 25th Annual Wine, Art and Music Festival in Gold Beach.

Next up: Brookings' annual Azalea Festival on Memorial Day weekend, followed by the July 4 community festival at the Port of Brookings Harbor, a pirate festival, a kite festival, a Renaissance festival, a fish derby and andhellip;

Well, you get the picture.

As you read this, dozens of volunteers, organizations and businesses are busily putting together final plans for nearly a dozen different events scheduled now through September. They receive much needed support from local sponsors.

Despite one setback andndash; the cancellation of the annual Festival of the Arts andndash; this year's festival season is shaping up to be one of the best. And that's good news for the local economy and community morale.

Each festival attracts hundreds and often thousands of visitors to our fair coast, who, in turn, spend money at local shops, motels and restaurants. Additionally, local artisans earn much-needed income selling their products, while local charities gain public awareness and, hopefully, donations.

For budget-conscious residents, most of the festivals are free and offer opportunities for high quality, yet inexpensive, entertainment. There's no need to drive elsewhere andndash; and pay the $4-a-gallon gas prices to get there.

A list of major summer events was published recently in our annual Vacation Guide. You can view this guide and a calendar of events for the summer at http://www.currypilot.com/Special-Pubs.

Yes, festival season has begun on the Southern Oregon Coast. From Port Orford to Brookings-Harbor, let the fun begin!
