Fred Townsend Yates Jr.

Fred Townsend Yates Jr. passed away in his sleep on July 18 in Brookings. He was born to Frederick and Virginia Yates on April 7, 1931, in Seattle. He lived most of his life in the Seattle area, graduating from Roosevelt High in 1950.
Fred married Miriam Alice Harwood in 1951. Together they had two children: Barbara in 1952, and Stephen in 1954.
Fred joined the Navy as a submariner. After his military service, he spent his career in the banking industry, starting out as a bank examiner. He went on to successfully manage a number of banks. Fred retired from the Bank of America and moved with Miriam to the Oregon coast.
Fred was active in the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He was also a lifetime dedicated member of the Masons. He belonged to the Genesis Lodge 305 as well as Sidney Croft Lodge 206 in Brookings. He was very active in the Shriners, Eastern Star and DeMolay. His passion and commitment to all these organizations was enthusiastic and rewarding.
Fred ran track, played baseball and basketball. He also enjoyed the Mariners and the Seahawks. Fred collected stamps and coins and played chess. He was a photographer buff and an avid astronomer.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Miriam. He is survived by his son and daughter, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Fred had a wonderful sense of humor and he really cared about people. He always pitched in to help and brought a smile, some wit and fun to any occasion.
