Carlton Wayne "Carl" Bowden

April 16, 1937-May 24, 2014

Carlton Wayne Bowden was born at home in Danielson, Connecticut, April 16, 1937, the youngest of five children.

He grew up in Danielson and graduated from Killingly High School.

After graduation he attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1964, he joined the U.S. Army and was trained in guided missile ordinance, then sent to Sausalito, California, and then to South Korea for a year before being discharged.

He then moved to San Francisco where he met Shirley Strahm at the Apostolic Faith Church. They were married June 24, 1967, and attended the Apostolic Faith Church in San Francisco until moving to Oregon in 1983. They attended the Apostolic Faith Church in Grants Pass. Carl served the Lord in street, jail and mission meetings, singing in church, working in USO and Merchant Marine ministries, rest home meetings, teaching Sunday School and serving in various positions in the Gideons International ministry.

He worked as a electronics technician, owned a dry cleaners, and had a Christian book business.

In 2006, he and Shirley moved to her parents former lily farm in Harbor. He loved living on the coast.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons Cliff, Tim, Dan and David; daughters-in-law Becky, Amy and Tammy; grandchildren Andrea McLean and husband Mark, Kailey, Melissa, Emily, Caleb, Abigail, Madyson, Joshua, Amanda, Joseph, Machaela and Isaac; sisters-in law Lou Dell Bowden and Dawn Bowden; and numerous nieces and nephews. His first great-grandchild is due in June.

Carl enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, computing, family history research, camping with family and other outdoor activities. He loved his Lord and his family. His greatest joy was being in the presence of his family, just listening to them and enjoying their interaction.

In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the ministry of the Gideons International. A representative of Gideons International will be at the memorial service to assist.

The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Grace Bible Church, 302 North Hazel St., in Brookings.
