Naomi Louise Kast

The Curry Coastal Pilot

Naomi Kast, 92, of Brookings, died Oct. 1, 2013, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

She was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Visalia, Calif., to Louise and John Wesley Irwin.

Naomi graduated from Madera High School, in California.

She met Elwood "Bob" Kast, at age 17, just before her graduation; they were married two weeks later.

The couple made their home in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

They moved to Brookings in 1975. Bob died in 1989.

Naomi managed her son's rental properties.

Naomi loved to bowl and play bingo. For years, she would make a costume for Halloween. She entered contests at the local casinos, where she won many first and second prizes. Naomi had a special talent - she was the world's worst cook. She was, above all, a lot of fun. She liked to say she was mean, ornery and hateful.

Naomi is survived by her children Bart Kast (Valerie), Tanya Crowe, all of Brookings, and Sandra McCollum (Jack) of Yorba Linda, Calif.; and a special family friend Richard Wellenbrock of Grants Pass. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by Bob, her husband of 50 years; son Robert; sister Irma; brother John; and grandson Robbie.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Event Center, 800 Chetco Ave. (across from Les Schwab), Brookings. A potluck will follow.
