Jerry Van Woods

Jerry Van Woods, known by those who loved him as "Smiley" and "Jer-Bear," died at 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2013, in Sacramento, Calif. He was 27 years old.
Jerry was born on Dec. 17, 1985, at Josephine Memorial Hospital in Grants Pass, to Gene Woods and Robin (Woods) Johnson.
He earned a General Education Diploma in 2009, and also graduated from James Madison High School. During Jerry's childhood and young adulthood, he loved to read and write, especially short stories. He was always known as a free spirit who went out of his way to be generous and loving to others. Jerry was never one to care much about what others thought of him, and always lived life to the fullest. He was adventurous, full of joy, and happy.
Jerry was a true "Renaissance man" who delighted in learning about all things. He was a freelance artist, a writer, a philosopher and a lover. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Jerry is survived by his mother Robin Johnson; stepfather Clarke Johnson; sister Michele (Woods) Robinson; brother Fred VanderVoorden; half-sisters Amy Woods and Jamie Woods; stepbrothers John Marrington and Ray Marrington; grandparents David and Marcia Shannon. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Harley Woods (1987) and Rick Woods (2008); father Gene Woods (2002).
A celebration of Jerry's life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Little Redwood Bar on the Chetco River in Brookings.
