Calvin H. Schlegel

Calvin H. Schlegel, 89, of Brookings, passed away Aug. 19, 2013, at a care facility in Brookings.

Calvin was born Sept. 25, 1923, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to Henry and Marguerite (Adkins) Schlegel.

In 1941, Calvin graduated from Santa Maria High School, then went on to earn his bachelor's degree in Los Angeles, and was licensed as a contractor. Calvin worked as an engineer in the construction industry, where he was quite the estimator, working on bridges and buildings.

In 1945, Calvin married Phyllis Marie Rodrigues in San Luis Obispo.

He retired from the construction and rental-yard business, and moved to Brookings in 1982.

In addition to his contracting career, Calvin was a mayor and councilman in Arroyo Grande, Calif. He was also a member of the Lions Club in Pismo Beach, Calif., for many years, and a 60-year member of Elks Lodge 322 in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He enjoyed catering barbecues in Pismo Beach and Arroyo Grande.

In Brookings, he was a member of the Star of the Sea Catholic Church. In his free time, Calvin enjoyed golfing as a charter member at Salmon Run Golf Course, going on elk hunting trips in Colorado, and fishing. Calvin also enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis of Brookings; son Robert E. Schlegel of El Sobrante, Calif.; grandchildren Garrett, Andy, Stacy and Shelly; and great-grandchildren Devin, Derek, Jillian, Haley, Hannah, and Kara.

Calvin was preceded in death by his son Leo David Schlegel; and brother Eugene Schlegel.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road in Brookings. Rev. Luan Nguyen will officiate.
