The Curry Coastal Pilot

When former Brookings resident Jewell Orr passed away on Feb. 19, 2013, we lost the matriarch of five generations of family.

Jewell was born Jan. 2, 1917, in Salado, Ark., and was 96 years of age when she passed.

She was the middle child of nine children, born to Charles and Mary Hendrickson. She is survived by two brothers, Arthur Hendrickson and Roland Hendrickson as well as many nieces and nephews.

She grew up in Texas and Arkansas and married Samuel J. Gott in 1934. The couple moved to Oregon from Texas in 1939, after the birth of daughter Jean in 1936 and daughter Joy in 1937.

They lived in Dayton until 1945 when they moved to Brookings to raise Easter lilies. That did not turn out to be a successful venture and Jewell went to work in the Brookings post office where she worked for almost 30 years. Sam worked in the building trade for many years, and then became a Curry County deputy sheriff until he retired in the early 1970s. Sam died in September 1976.

Jewell married Jack Orr of Brookings in May of 1986. Jack died in December of 1988.

Daughter Jean married Rayburn Erwin and four children were born: Michael, Laurel, Paul and Neil.

Daughter Joy had two children: Sonja and Scott Ingle, and was married to Charles McGloin at the time of her death in January 2012. Great-grandchildren include Cedar Nickels, Anna Nickels, Jonathan Alrick and Melissa Reed Edwards; great-great grandchildren include Jude Elizabeth Nickels and Luca Reed Edwards.

Jewell moved to Eagle Point in 2001 and resided at Eagle Cove Retirement and Assisted Living Center until her death.

She will be missed by all of her family, and her generosity and love will be remembered by all.

A family gathering is scheduled in August in Central Point.
