Former Brookings resident W. Harold Upton, 78, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, in Florence, of myelofibrosis.
Harold was born Aug. 14, 1934, to Carl and Linda Upton.
He, his five brothers and a sister lived on a small farm in Dean, Iowa, where they attended a one-room schoolhouse.
Harold and his family moved to Southern California when he was a teenager and he joined the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter. All of his brothers were members of different branches of the military.
In 1957 he met and married Marie Hasal. It was a whirlwind courtship and an extraordinary 55-year relationship.
In 1962, they moved to Las Vegas, where he started a towing business. In 1980, he expanded his business and opened Auto Magic Paint and Body Center. It went from a small shop to become the largest auto body center in the state of Nevada.
After retiring to the Oregon Coast he became an avid golfer. His other hobbies were RVing, boating and fishing.
After a short retirement period he was asked to establish a nationwide club for National RV coach owners. He and Marie had the opportunity to travel the U.S. extensively, and over a period of five years they met thousands of people while putting together parties, entertainment and travel adventures for hundreds of friends. What a time everybody had!
With no children of their own, Harold took advantage of every opportunity to spoil, enjoy and love and mentor all of his nieces and nephews. Harold was always the rogue uncle they wanted to spend time with. He had a profound influence on many of their lives. He left a legacy of love, kindness and humor and total unselfishness.
"When he shall die, take him and cut him out in little stars and he will make the face of heavens so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun."
A special thank you to Florence Hospice and the Peace Harbor Hospital Staff. Also to Dr. Paula Ciesielki and Dr. Khurram Naqvi for all of your support and caring at such a prolonged and difficult time.
