The Curry Coastal Pilot

Katylu Burke passed away Aug. 28, 2012, in Brookings.

She was born Nov. 2, 1942, to Arnold and Adeline Kappeler, in Woodland, Calif.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde; her brother Gerald Kappeler, (Pat); sister Marlene Arconi, (Gordon); an aunt, three nieces, a great-nephew, six great-nieces, several great-cousins and many close friends.

After graduating from nursing school in San Francisco in 1965, she met Clyde when his commander in the U.S. Army, Gerald Kappeler, ordered him to date his sister, regardless of his other interests. The marriage, a year later, lasted 46 years to the day.

Katylu helped put her husband through graduate school and then worked as a registered nurse in clinics and doctors' offices in Maryland and Colorado.

She and Clyde retired in 2003 and moved to Brookings from Aurora, Colo. She soon became active in the Brookings-Harbor Garden Club and served in various positions. In all of her years, friends and relatives described her as organized, tough as nails and optimistic. Her husband says she was an exceptional partner and a great cook. She also sewed nearly all of her clothes, worked on dozens of outdoor projects and maintained close contact with her aunt.

A funeral service with Rosary at 10 a.m. and Mass at 10:30 a.m. will be Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 820 Old County Road, in Brookings.

Burial will take place at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Woodland.
