Winfield Scott "Scotty" Wilson, 90, died March 4, 2012, at Curry Good Samaritan Center Nursing Home in Brookings.

He was preceded in death by Jean Rita (Dawson) Wilson, his loving wife of 65 years. The two were married Dec. 21, 1940, in Hamilton, Ohio.

Scotty was born Feb. 27, 1922, in Kentucky. He lived for long periods in Michigan and California before moving to Brookings.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS West Point during World War II.

As a caring couple both he and his wife Jean exhibited a concern for children in need and later in life Scotty supported wounded veterans.

Throughout his lifetime, Scotty treasured self reliance and independence. He lived only two weeks in Curry Good Samaritan Nursing Home, but was grateful for their care and also for that of Jerstad Manor where he had lived for several years.

He is survived by his daughter Sandra Carter and her husband Al Carter of Golden Valley, Ariz.; and his son Gary Wilson and his wife Diane Grimard Wilson of Oak Park, Ill. Surviving siblings are sisters Maxine McKenna of Tennessee, Wanda Miller of Missouri; brothers Bill Wilson of Michigan and John Wilson of Arizona.

He is also survived by grandchildren Randy Carter, Terri Allen and Shell Rosario; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private U.S. Coast Guard burial at sea will take place on Saturday, April 7. A remembrance will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Jerstad Manor, 96 Park Ave., in Brookings.
