Joyce Anne (King) Julian

The Curry Coastal Pilot

Joyce Anne Julian passed away at her home in Brookings surrounded by family on Dec. 14, 2011. She was 67.

Joyce was born Aug. 26, 1944, in Salem, to Jackie and Lila (Beal) King.

She grew up in Brookings, graduating from Brookings-Harbor High School in 1962. She attended business school in Portland briefly before marrying Henry Julian.

As he was in the U.S. Coast Guard, they transferred first to Port Angeles and then to Juneau, Alaska. They later divorced.

In Juneau, Joyce began what would be a 30-year career with the Alaska Department of Education, retiring in 2003 as a Finance Officer.

She then returned to Brookings with her five cats and two dogs. Joyce's menagerie of pets grew as time went on; she loved her animals.

In retirement Joyce was very active at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, including service on the Altar Guild and coordination of the Church's annual rummage sales.

Joyce loved life, whether she was spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, walking on the beach, going to concerts at Azalea Park, or going on picnics up the river with her family. One of the most important things in Joyce's life was to make sure her brother, Jerry, who has special needs, was well taken care of and enjoyed life.

Survivors include her son David Julian of Brookings; daughter Jolene Julian of Juneau; mother Lila King of Brookings; grandchildren Taylyn, Chase and Ashlee Julian; great-grandchild Wyatt Hickok; special "grandkids" Katherine and Elizabeth Wray; sister Janice King of Brookings; brother Jerry King of Brookings.

Joyce was preceded in death by her father and a brother-in-law, T.L. King.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 401 Fir St., Brookings, OR 97415.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 401 Fir St. Rev. Bernie Lindley will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.
