Madelyn B. Swaney, 88, Brookings, died Feb. 15, 2001, in Brookings.

She was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Kansas City, Kan.

She moved to Klamath Falls in 1947, then to Gold Beach in March 1992. She moved to Brookings in 1995.

Mrs. Swaney earned her associate of arts degree from Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and her bachelors degree from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

She attended the University of Oregon where she earned her masters degree in library science. She taught literature and library at Fremont and Ponderosa, Calif., schools until her retirement in 1987.

She developed a learning and speed reading lab at Ponderosa Junior High School, which was nationally recognized, her family said. She was named one of Americas Outstanding Teachers in 1972.

Mrs. Swaney was an active volunteer for many Klamath Basin civic activities including the United Way and the American Red Cross. She was chairman of the Blood Mobile for many years. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Klamath Falls for more than 40 years. She and her husband were charter members of the Klamath Yacht Club.

Survivors are her son Hugh M. Swaney II of Palm Springs, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Jane K. and Richard Olsen of Gold Beach; grandchildren John K. Olsen and wife Debbie of Gold Beach; Stephen L. Swaney and wife Michelle of Kennewick, Wash.; Patrick K. Swaney and wife Lori of Evergreen, Colo.; Jennifer K. Olsen of Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.; great-grandson Jeremy K. Anderson of Gold Beach; friend Dr. Richard Schnitgen of Palm Springs.

Preceding her in death was her husband Dr. Hugh M. Swaney May 18, 1960; sisters Geraldine Bridges and Mildred Buckles; grandson Richard John Olsen.

Memorial services are scheduled for March 4 at 4 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Klamath Falls. She will be buried beside her husband at Klamath Memorial Park.
