Former Brookings building inspector Douglas Lee Bales, 48, Mukilteo, Wash., died April 25, 2001, at his home.
He was born Nov. 19, 1952, in Huron, S.D. to Marvin and Jackie Bales. He was raised in Cupertino, Calif.
He worked as a building official in Forest Grove, Brookings and Douglas County before moving to Washington in May of 2000 to work as a building supervisor for the City of Bellevue.
He was musically gifted and enjoyed sharing his talent and love of music with others, his family said.
Survivors are his fiancee, Shirley Smith of Mukilteo, Wash.; his mother, Jackie Bales of Beaverton; sisters Patty Nelson and Carrie Bales, both of Hillsboro; brother Chuck Bales of Union City, Calif.
Preceding him in death was his father, Marvin Bales.
A memorial service will be held in Hillsboro Friday, May 4, at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Christian Center, 4400 N.W. Glencoe Road.
Friends are invited to join the family at a reception in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
