Effie Marie (Ribbs) Kern, 76, Brookings, died July 2, 2001, died in Brookings.

She was born Nov. 18, 1924, in San Jose, Calif., to Clyde and Ola Ribbs.

She was raised in San Jose and attended University of California, Berkeley, and earned a masters of social work at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

She married Don Kern June 1, 1956.

Mrs. Kern worked for Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties as a social worker supervisor for 38 years retiring in 1985.

She was a member of the American Association of University Women, senior center, Friends of the Chetco Community Public Library and Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

She volunteered with the Emblem Club, Literary Council and the chamber of commerce.

Survivors are her husband of 45 years, Don Kern of Brookings; daughter, Charlene Kern of Seattle, Wash.; son, Don Kern III of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Bette (Ribbs) Isabelle of Richmond, Calif.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

A service is planned for July 14 at 11 a.m. at Littys Brookings Chapel, 517 Railroad St.
