Kathleen Laurel Kathy Hiltz, 77, Brookings, died July 27, 2001, at her home.
She was born Aug. 21, 1923, in San Jose, Calif., to Anne and James Henderson.
In her early childhood her mother became ill and she and two sisters lived in the Los Angeles Orphanage for five years.
She graduated from Belmont High School in Los Angeles.
Mrs. Hiltz served in the U.S. Navy as a Wave, (Seaman First Class) from 1943 to 1946. She was an authorized driver of Navy vehicles and her duties included driving busses, limousines, ambulances, trucks and jeeps.
After the war she worked in retail sales and became an assistant buyer at Kahns Department Store in Oakland, Calif.
She married William Bill Hiltz Oct. 15, 1955, and they settled in Hayward, Calif.
They moved to San Ramon, Calif., where she worked part time as playground supervisor at two San Ramon schools and later on the assembly line at Sunset Designs.
She retired to Brookings in August 1983.
She enjoyed craftwork of many kinds as well as carving and polishing driftwood.
Survivors are her husband of Brookings; daughter, Wendy Freitas; granddaughter, Heather; grandsons, Matthew and Steven Freitas, all of San Andreas, Calif.
Also surviving is her niece, Sharon Shorer of Pasadena, Calif.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and sisters, Barbara Rudd and Genevieve Smith, of the Los Angeles area.
There will be no formal services, but a memorial gathering may be planned at a later date.
