Vernon R. Keays

Vernon R. Keays, 92, Brookings, died Nov. 15, 2001, in Brookings.

Mr. Keays was born Nov. 13, 1909, in Elk River, Minn. He was named for his great-uncle, the pioneering naturalist Vernon Bailey. The family moved to Corvallis, Mont., where Mr. Keays lived as a boy.

He later moved to the Los Angeles area, worked as an engineer for several industrial firms and was a partner in a ship outfitting company.

In 1955 Mr. Keays moved to Missoula, Mont., where he married Jeanette Westler in 1957, operated a home-building business and worked for the county assessor.

In 1972 the Keayses moved to Honolulu and in 1974 to Fallbrook, Calif.

They settled in Brookings in 1992.

A 32nd degree Mason, Mr. Keays also was a member of Kiwanis and other service clubs, and was a pioneer amateur radio operator (W7FEF).

Surviving are his wife of Brookings; children, Priscilla and her husband, William Doshier of Riverside, Calif., Wendall Keays of Oceanside, Calif.; Susan and her husband, Brooks Anderson of Crescent City; and Deborah Westler of Woodbridge, Calif.

He is also survived by his sister, Hazel and her husband Arlon Helms of Brookings; nieces and nephews Kathleen Sullivan of Helena, Mont., Peggy OSullivan of Sandpoint, Idaho, Michael Sullivan of Missoula, Mont., Kevin Sullivan of Albuquerque, N.M., and Patricia Sullivan of Seattle. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

His grandson, James Keays, preceded him in death.

A memorial service was Nov. 20, at Chetco Inn Residential Care Facility in Brookings.
