Cecil Darrel Nelson, 63, Brookings, died April 28, 2002, at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

He was born Oct. 16, 1938, to Arthur and Elsie (Stephens) Nelson in Winchester, Idaho, and moved to Lewiston, Idaho, as a child.

He attended Tammany Grade School and Lewiston High School. After high school he worked at Potlatch Forrest Pulp and Paper Mill.

He married Sharon Snyder June 10, 1960, and moved to Brookings in 1964 where he was a shareholder of Brookings Plywood until the mill sold. He then worked as a millwright for South Coast Lumber Co. until his retirement in 1994.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to go to his yearly family campout. He enjoyed taking photographs of his family, especially his grandchildren, and the deer, turkey, quail and raccoons that came into his yard.

Survivors include wife of Brookings; sons and daughters-in-law, Darrel Nelson and Michelle; Darren Nelson and Athena of Brookings; daughters, Darla Nelson of Lewiston, Idaho; Karla Nelson of Palisades, N.Y.; brothers, Gene Nelson of Lewiston; Ken Nelson of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother-in-law, Jim Gilkey of North Bend; stepmother, Elly Nelson; stepbrother, Steve Giere; stepsisters, Sue Ryan and Lisa DeMaio.

Also surviving are grandchildren Marc, Derek, Ryan, Megan, Jordan, Caydn and Brittney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Helen Gilkey.

A memorial service is planned for today (May 11) at Trinity Lutheran Church at 3 p.m.
