Florence Henry

Florence Henry, 79, of Brookings, died from an infection April 18, 2002.

She was born June 9, 1922, in Denver, Colo., to G.E. Montgomery and Mildred Disbrow.

She was the second of five children, including two brothers and two sisters.

Her family moved west to Oakland, Calif., in 1938. She graduated from Oakland High School in 1939 and San Francisco Junior College in 1942.

She worked in San Francisco during World War II for the Office of Price Administration and as a page for the fledgling United Nations.

She married Harmon Henry, a sailor at the time, in 1946. The marriage lasted 53 years until his death in 1999. Together they raised two boys and a girl.

She was a devoted wife and mother, president of the PTA and an employee of the Sonoma County Department of Social Services.

When she retired, Mrs. Henry volunteered as a parental stress support group facilitator. She also worked as a volunteer matchmaker for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization.

She and her husband moved to Brookings in 1990 and both became active in the Chetco Pelican Players.

She enjoyed reading and writing, joined a readers' and writers' group, and published a book of short stories called andquot;Point of View,andquot; based on events of her life. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and Toastmasters.

Survivors include brothers, Glen and John Montgomery, sons, Roy and Kenneth Disbrow; daughters-in-law, Jeannine and Roberta Disbrow; and grandchildren, Dustin, Gabe, Sarah and Laura.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Marjorie and Maribel, and daughter Marjorie.

A celebration of life is scheduled Sunday, May 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at her home at 418 Fir St.
