Kenneth Gordon Brown

Kenneth Gordon Brown, 86, Brookings, died April 21, 2002, in Brookings of natural causes.

He was a 12-year resident of Brookings.

Mr. Brown was born Dec. 25, 1915, in Millerton, N.Y., in the upper Hudson River Valley to Herman Eli Brown and Mildred Frances Coons Brown.

He grew up in Millerton and developed a lifelong love of hunting and fishing.

Mr. Brown graduated from high school at Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass., and graduated from Cornell University in 1940. At Cornell, he was a 60-minute football player and captain of the team during its last undefeated season, 1939. He also played baseball.

He was married to the late Cecilia Jacob in Perth Amboy, N.J.

Mr. Brown enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in early 1942 and served during World War II. Following the war, he was a public health officer for the state of New York and then Chautauqua County. He retired in 1966.

He was elected to Cornell University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

Among his surviving relatives are Linda Brown Johnson of Boulder Creek, Calif.; and D. Brown Oppmann of Brookings.

Also surviving are three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife; and son, Kenneth G. Brown Jr.

The family will hold private celebrations of life in Brookings and Boulder Creek.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Brown wished donations be made to the Oregon Southcoast Fishermen's Youth Activities, c/o Dick Sutter, 96778 Alder Ridge Road, Brookings, OR 97415.
