Mary Constance Drew Altermatt

Mary Constance Drew Altermatt, 89, died Sept. 7, 2002, at her home in Brookings of natural causes.

She was born Oct. 7, 1912 in Pasadena, Calif. to Frank and Katherine Baer Drew. Her father was an engineer and they traveled extensively for construction projects during her youth.

While attending college, she met Edgar Altermatt at a church youth group and they were married Oct. 14, 1933 in Oakland, Calif. After marriage, she became a homemaker. The family lived in Oakland for a time before moving to Berkeley, Calif., where they resided for over twenty years.

While in Berkeley Mrs. Altermatt was active in the Girl Scouting program as a troop leader. The family had a summer cabin in the Sierra Nevadas and spent entire summers there during their children's growing up years.

The Altermatts moved to Brookings 30 years ago when her husband retired. She read at Good Samaritan Center for residents, and in the 1970s taught Sunday School at the 1st Baptist Church and joined the Garden Club. She and her husband enjoyed RVing and located all andquot;trailsandquot; significant to the pioneer West. They also traveled to Alaska and Hawaii, the Holy Lands, South America, Australia, and New Zealand.

She is proceeded in death by her parents and a sister, Katherine.

She is survived by her husband, Edgar; two daughters Judith of New Mexico, and Carole of Spokane, Wash.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to Chetco Community Library, 405 Alder St., Brookings, Ore. 97415.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
