Frederick Edward Spikre, 86, died on Sept. 15, 2002, in Smith River.

Mr. Spikre was born Aug. 6, 1916, in Milwaukee, Ill., He was a 23 year resident of Del Norte County and moved to the Mouth of the Smith River from Panorama City, Calif.

He grew up in Pasadena and Hollywood, Calif. He graduated from Hollywood High School.

On April 5, 1942, he married Pauline Tretten in the Chapel at Fort Mason, Calif.

Prior to his retirement in 1979, he was employed by Flying Tiger Lines. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1934 in Brookings, American Legion Post 195 and Chetco Senior Center in Brookings. He was also a member of the Del Norte Senior Center and Del Norte AARP 788 in Crescent City.

Mr. Spikre was a dedicated barber shop singer, having sung with the Coastal Aires.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Pauline of Smith River; daughters, Joan Hillerts of Van Nuys, Calif.; Pamela Davis of Lancaster, Calif.; Leslie Elsing of Astoria and John Spikre of Panorama, Calif.; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Jason Merchant.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. at the Smith River Methodist Church, Beckstead Ave. and first St. in Smith River. Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City.
