Byron andquot;Patandquot; Lester Johnston III, 53, of Harbor was found dead in his home on Sept. 17. He died of natural causes.
He was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1949, to Byron and Margaret (Evans) Johnston. He was raised in Bell Gardens, Calif., and following high school, briefly attended El Cerritos Junior College in El Cerritos, Calif.
He joined the Army and served both in Korea and in the Vietnam conflict. He was injured in the line of duty and received the Purple Heart medal. Following his discharge, he held various jobs in commercial fishing and forestry. He had made his home in Harbor for the last 27 years.
He is survived by a son, Michael Johnston of Brookings; mother, Margaret Johnston and sister, Sue Hutchens of La Mirada, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Jimmie Jean and Bill Minmitte of Mesa Ariz.; brother and sister in-law John and Diane Hutchens of Corona, Calif.; one grandchild, Dylan Kai Johnston of Brookings; many nieces and nephews, and a long-time friend and mother of his son, Joanne Chatman of Brookings.
He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Carl Johnston.
A private wake to be announced later. His ashes will be scattered at sea at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
