Zella Shepherd, 80, of Brookings died Oct. 1, 2002, in Crescent City of natural causes.
She was born Sept. 27,1922, in Dry Hill, Kentucky to Will and Edna (Edwards) Begley.
She was raised and educated in Hyden Kentucky. Her early years were spent on the family farm.
On Aug. 13, 1947, she married Elisha Shepherd in Hyden. She then spent many years as an Army wife, making a home for her family wherever Elisha was stationed during his military career including Germany, California and Kentucky.
In 1994, the couple followed their son Mike and family to Brookings, where she has resided since. Mr. Shepherd died in l998.
Throughout her life, family has been Mrs. Shepherd's primary interest. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and matriarch of the family. She especially enjoyed caring for her grandchildren.
Survivors include her two daughters, Barbara Shepherd of London, Ken., and Aileen and husband Don Chandler of Welches; two sons and their wives, Mike and Shelley Shepherd of Brookings, and Phillip and Charmaine Shepherd of Lexington, Ken.; two brothers, Eugene Begley of Corbin, Ken., and Ralph Begley of Dayton, Ohio ; sister Aileen McDaniel of Tipp City, Ohio; six grandchildren, Kevin, Marc, Emily, Christine, Alisha and Cassandra; and one great-grandchild, Alex.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Brookings-Harbor School District Band Program, 564 Fern Ave., Brookings, OR 97415.
Private family services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.
