Space is still available for the third annual "Day of Drums," a fun, hands-on percussion event for all ages and skill levels, scheduled for 10 a.m to 2 p.m. in Brookings on Saturday, Aug. 23.
The event, hosted by Stagelights Musical Arts Community, will be led by professional percussionists Mombo Hernandez and Michael Penny at the Harris Beach Rest Area (off Highway 101 across from Harris Beach State Park).
Participants will play and learn about Latin and Native American hand drums, play a variety of percussion instruments, and make and decorate their own frame drum. Drum materials are provided by Kerr Ace Hardware.
There will be a barbecue lunch, sponsored by the Grocery Outlet in Harbor and Fred Meyer in Brookings. The event will end with a giant drum circle.
The fee is $10 per person, which covers the cost of instruction, drum-making materials and lunch.
Space is limited to the first 45 people and pre-registration is strongly recommended. Registration forms may be picked up in Brookings at the Curry Coastal Pilot, 507 Chetco Ave., and the Chetco Community Public Library, 405 Alder St. Forms can also be downloaded from Stagelights' Facebook page and its website at http://www.stagelights.us.
