Newcomer shows works at Manley

Pelican Bay Arts Association (PBAA) has selected Theda DeRamus as featured artist and will display several of her pastel paintings in their Manley Art Center gallery during August.

DeRamus, who grew up in Roseburg, spent most of her life in Southern California. She says, "I have always painted, and after high school, I attended Columbus College of Art And Design in Ohio."

She adds, "Over the years, I learned many different arts and crafts and, in the 80s, was able to put those skills to work as a costume designer for theater and film."

DeRamus has also illustrated several children's books, including "Miguel, Mateo and the Magic Fish," a bi-lingual tale of the adventures of twin brothers in the Yucatan area of Mexico.

During the 13 years that DeRamus lived in Ojai, California, she began experimenting with pastels and fell in love with the process.

"Although I painted with acrylics for most of my life, I now paint almost exclusively with pastels. I mainly do landscapes, both plein air and from my photos, but also enjoy floral subjects."

When DeRamus moved to Gold Beach in November, she brought her love for pastels and landscape painting with her, saying, "I'm looking forward to exploring the new scenery here in Oregon."

For those interested in the technical details, DeRamus uses both soft pastels and pastel pencils for her landscapes.

Manley Art Center is at 433 Oak St., Brookings. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
