Curry County Fair Manager Ron Crook is excited about this year's event - scheduled Thursday through Sunday in Gold Beach - and has every reason to be.

"Last year was a great year!" Crook said. "The fair shattered all records across the boards. Food concessions, displays, attendance - you name it. We had it all."

Crook isn't one to rest on his laurels. He and a small army of volunteer fair friends have been laboring all year to make this year's fair better than the last.

“I couldn’t do anything without them; They are the best,” he said about the volunteers.

The theme of this year’s fair is “Razzle, Dazzle” and Crook points to an impressive list of events and activities that he feels will appeal to fairgoers.

“We’ve got something for everyone,” he said.

The fair opens every day at 10 a.m.

Even the weather looks good for the upcoming weekend, he said. The National Weather Service is forecasting clear skies and highs in the mid-70s.

The fair will include crowd favorites such as the Lucky 7 Bulls and Barrels rodeo on Thursday, a Hill-Billy Relay contest on Friday, the Tuff Trucks competition on Saturday, and Mud Drag Races on Sunday. All these events will happen in the covered arena.

One of the main draws of any local fair is the exhibits, including the Junior Livestock and 4-H presentations, the floral departments, and arts and crafts. The exhibits are where the talents of community members shine, Crook said.

“Of course, we’ll be returning our popular local Battle of the Bands’ competition, the Talent Show, the Beautiful Baby and Diaper Derby competitions, along with the Ugly Dog Contest,” he said.

The caliber of talent in the Talent Show has impressed Crook.

“In recent years we have sent on to the Oregon State Talent Show competition two individuals who eventually were crowned state champions,” he said.

Previous talent shows have included singers, comics, dancers, magicians and storytellers.

New this year are:

•ZuZu Acrobats from Africa. The ZuZu show includes tumbling, contortions, dance, human pyramids, juggling and a tower of chairs. They have entertained at Disneyland, Disney World, Six Flags Parks to name a few.

•Exotic Animal Show will feature big game cats, along with a menagerie of wild animals such as a kinkajou, skunks, foxes, toucans and falcons.

•BMX Freestyle Team Riders will defy gravity as they put their bikes through a series of airborne stunts that often involve audience members.

•Carnival rides, will including favorites such as the Gravitron, Tornado, Sizzler and the Zipper. There will also be a variety of children’s rides, including an old-fashioned merry-go-round.

The Artisan Hall will display the works of local artists as well as a miniature train display by the Stout Mountain Railway, and a Honey Bee Observation Hive sponsored by the Oregon South Coast Bee Keepers Association.
