Fireworks show a go at the port

The Brookings chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has received enough donations to meet the $16,000 price tag for the Fourth of July fireworks show at the Port of Brookings Harbor.

"We got everything paid for. The deposit is paid and everything is ready to go," said VFW post commander Rick Bremer.

Homeland Pyrotechnics, from Jamieson, will be conducting the fireworks show, their first time performing in Brookings.

"The fire chief from Jamieson came down Saturday morning, looked at the venue, and is really excited about the location," said Bremer. "He has been shooting fireworks for thirty years and has never done a show over the water. He can't wait to get back here and get started."

Bremer goes on to state that the show wouldn't not be possible without the help of the community.

"All I can say is thanks to the public and the businesses for making this happen. Everyone we've asked to help has done so and we really couldn't be more grateful," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, the public did a wonderful job."

In addition to the fireworks show, the VFW will also havebarbecue tents set up to serve food and drinks. One tent will be located near the Coast Guard Station and another near the Best Western Plus Beachfront Inn.

"We want the public to come down and enjoy the great food and fireworks," said Bremer.

Other activities at the Port Friday include live music starting at 1 p.m. and the 17 annual chili cookoff from 1 to 3 p.m.
