Chetco Pelican Players present "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"

Its opening night for the Chetco Pelican Players musical comedy "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Chetco Playhouse, 1240 Chetco Ave., Brookings.

Free Mediterranean food, soft drinks and champagne, will be prepared and served on opening night by hospitality hostess Claire Willard.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for students. Tickets are available at Wright's Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings, New Wave Video in Harbor and at the door. This show is recommended for adults.

Based on the 1988 film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. The first is the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson (Don Jones) who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Lawrence has the secretive assistance of French Police Chief Andre Thibault (Edgar Perez). The other grifter, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson (Matthew Perez), more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health.

After meeting in a hotel lobby, the two unsuccessfully begin working together, attempting to cheat seemingly wealthy ladies Muriel Eubanks (Jamie Legate) and Jolene Oakes (Bre Ellis) only to find that their small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate (Karen de Lucca), wins - and the other must leave town. A battle of cons ensues.

Additional showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, as well as the following two weekends. There will be no show Friday, July 4.

Brookings Harbor Community Theater opens "The Quest"

Brookings Harbor Community Theater opens the junior production of "The Quest: A Fairy Tale With An Attitude," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Harbor Performing Arts Center.

In this humorous take on traditional fairy tales, the story begins with something terribly wrong with Grandma - she's sick and weak, but luckily for her, recovery is just a quest away!

The teacher at the exclusive Fantasy Academy challenges her fairy tale character students to embark on a quest to gather three hard-to-obtain items and cure Grandma. Of course, every good fairy tale has a villain, including the big bad wolf. If Grandma is in good health, Big Bad's plot to snatch the basket of goodies away from Little Red With a Hood might fail. He must keep Grandma feeble by finding the three items before the students do.

The fairy tale students fight off the wolf and his sidekick, Tag-Along Troll, and continuously seek the audience's assistance throughout their journey. Naturally, in the end, their quest is successful and Grandma is better than ever.

Characters include: Teacher Fairy, Kelsie Stumpenhaus; Grandma, Bobbi Vineyard; Big Bad Wolf, Connor Chapman; Little Red With A Hood, Hailey Failor; Tag-Along Troll, Ashton Chapman; Western Pig, Gillian Vineyard-Hendricks; Just Plain Ordinary Pig, Hauna Huck; 007 Goldilocks, Addie Willis-Blunt; Not Very Short Dwarf, Gillian Castleberry; Snowy White, Ashanti Franks; Doofy, Banyon Huck; Dandy, Teague Pierren; Evil Queen of Denial, Destiny LeValle; Big Momma Bear, Katrina Krawez; Daddy Bear, Brian Walker; Cute-As-A-Button Baby Bear, Reagan Pieren; Rapanzel Ariel Hoskinson; Somewhat Handsome Prince, Dominic Hendrix; and the Gingerbread Girl, Briana Walker.
