Plant sale set at Botanical Garden

The Curry Coastal Pilot

The Brookings-Harbor Garden Club will be participating in Garage Sale Saturday by presenting its annual garden sale at the Brookings Botanical Garden.

The sale will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 3. The 2-acre garden is located on North Bank Chetco Road between Highway 101 and Old County Road. Parking is available off Old County Road.

The plant sale will be selling mostly propagated plants from the garden. Club members will also set up booths selling items of "this and that," including locally propagated plants, jewelry, vintage collectables and bonsai.

Of particular interest this year is Grevillea "Barbara DeMoss," a new cultivar grown from seed from Grevillea "Fanfare," originally sown in 2009. This Grevillea is a low- spreading shrub with a mounding habit and red flowers like small combs in the spring and summer.

The plant was grown by garden club member Paul Otto, and the garden club has named it for one its own, Barbara DeMoss, who is one of the Brookings Botanical Garden's biggest "cheerleaders" and "Encourager in Chief."

The garden is open for viewing daily. Visitors are welcome to walk the paths to see what the garden has to offer. There are areas of native plants, a rock garden, dwarf conifer, and international plants that do well with our arid summers and are wind and deer resistant.

There is also an area of azaleas, rhododendrons, hellebores, peonies and ferns in a woodland setting, along with grasses and heathers. The garden has a nature walk area with two bridges crossing a creek that has a feeling of "getting-out" in the woods.

A current project is a garden rain swale.

The Brookings-Harbor Garden Club considers this to be their jewel among all the projects they have undertaken. This is the time to purchase a plant and support the botanical garden.

The sale will be canceled in the event of rain.
