CRESCENT CITY - The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness (DNACA) presents its final performance of its 31st season - Turtle Island Quartet - at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014.
The quartet will perform a special program called "Have You Ever Been andhellip;," featuring the music and styles of two pioneering giants: Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane, at Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St., Crescent City.
Winner of the 2006 and most recently, the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island Quartet performs music that includes American rhythms and styles, such as rock, jazz and bluegrass. The quartet is "a unified voice that truly breaks new ground - authentic and passionate - a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today," noted renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
The quartet's beginning in 1985 was the result of violinist David Balakrishnan's explorations and compositional vision while completing his master's degree program at Antioch University West. The ensuing journey has taken Turtle Island Quartet through forays into folk, bluegrass, swing, bebop, funk, RandB, new age, rock, hip-hop, as well as the music of Latin America and India, compiling a repertoire consisting of hundreds of ingenious arrangements and originals.
Tickets cost $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors 65 and older and $12 for full-time students in K-college. Tickets are available at Wright's Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings, Del Norte Office Supply in Crescent City and at the door at 6:45 p.m. the night of the show.
