The Curry Coastal Pilot

Opening night of Brookings Harbor Community Theater's production of "Enchanted April" will feature a sampling of foods and beverages as they would be served in an Italian villa.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, and the curtain opens at 7:30 at the Harbor Performing Arts Center, 97900 Shopping Center Ave.

Eight actors from Gasquet, Brookings and Gold Beach make up the cast, under the direction of Lynette McPherson, of this award winning romantic comedy by Matthew Barber. The play, based on the novel by Elizabeth Von Arnim, won the 2003 John Gassner Award for Outstanding New American Play and a Tony Award.

The story begins in 1920s London and tells of two discontented housewives - Lottie Wilton, played by Stephanie La Torre, and Rose Arnott, played by Barbara Holmes - who decide to rent a villa in Italy for a holiday from their bleak marriages. They recruit two English women to share the cost - a bitter elderly woman, the "Grande Dame" Mrs. Graves, played by Anne Tlacker-Hall, and a beautiful young socialite, Lady Caroline Bramble, played by Nickie Chirelli.

They all fall under the spell of Bella Italia, among the wisteria blossoms and Mediterranean sunshine, blooming and rediscovering themselves in ways that they - and the audience - could never have expected, according to Dramatists Play Service.

Additional characters include Mellerich Wilton (Tony La Torre), Fredrick Arnott (Evan Wise), Anthony Wilding (Josiah Wise) and the Italian housekeeper Costanza, played by Jan Norman.

Additional shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, as well as the following weekend. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for students. Tickets are available at New Wave Video in Harbor and Wright's Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings.
