The Curry Coastal Pilot

Mathletes from Brookings Harbor Christian School and other Southwest Oregon schools competed in a contest of the national MATHCOUNTS program on Feb. 20 at the Boys and Girls Club in Coos Bay.

The BHCS team included Nathaniel Barnard, Miles Howard, Jeremy Pettinger and an individual competitor, Jamie Schultz.

Six schools and approximately 40 students competed. Schools taking part were Brookings Harbor Christian School, Marshfield High School, North Bend Middle School, Riley Creek School, Millicoma Middle School, and Sunset Intermediate School.

The Southwest Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Oregon organizes the competition. School officials said the students had a wonderful time and enjoyed practicing the skills they have been working on all year.

Teachers and students have been preparing for the competition since the fall. Students competed individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches. Subjects included algebra, probability, statistics and geometry.

MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students, who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability. MATHCOUNTS inspires excellence, confidence and curiosity through fun and challenging math programs, providing today's students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineeringand mathematics careers, according to school officials.

Celebrating its 31st anniversary, the 2014 MATHCOUNTS competition consists of more than 6,000 schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U. S. territories and Department of Defense and State Department affiliated schools.
