Brookings Harbor Community Theater presents the youth musical "Pocahontas" at the Harbor Performing Arts Center, 97900 Shopping Center Ave.

The musical opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, and continues at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 and the following weekend.

The "Wordspinner" (Michaela Dingle) and the rhythmic beat of the tom-toms open and close this musical written for all age groups, according to a news release from the theater. Pocahontas (Stephanie Birks) is the daughter of the mighty Algonquin Chief Powhatan (Jed Doan). The princess delights in playing with Raven (Nikki Campbell), Wolf (Alia Graves) and Squirrel (Megan Pearson).

Pocahontas, based on the book by Vera Morris, has also made friends with the English settlers of Jamestown, a community struggling with starvation and sickness, according to Pioneer Drama Services. Filled with Native American lore and beautiful music, this play is true to the original legend. The performance includes Scott DeTurk's original music, featuring such songs as "Live Forever," "No Common Ground" and "Your Heart Always Knows."

Cast members include Jennifer Christow as Aunt Morning Star, Cheyenne Williams as Thundercloud, Ashanti Franks as Charity Matthews, Everett Van Maren as Thomas Rogers, Heaven Montanez as Mercy Rogers, Daniel Pearson as Capt. John Smith, Kathleen Pearson as Spirit of Mother Earth, Layla Gagnon as Little Running Rabbit, Ella Campbell as Happy-She-Walks, McCade Howard as Brave Eagle, Faith Burton as Margaret Wheeler, Grace Norman as Barbara Mathews, Dezi Kausen as Carolina, Dominic Hendrix as Jeremy, and Ariel Hoskinson as Ester Finley.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $7 for students and $5 for children 5 and younger. Tickets may be purchased at New Wave Video in Harbor or Wright's Custom Framing and Art Supplies in Brookings. For information and reservations, call 541-661-2473.
