Trotting for food

Randy Robbins, Pilot staff writer

Under clear, cold, sunny skies at the Coastal Home Health and Hospice storage facility near the North Jetty in Gold Beach, approximately 100 people braved bone-chilling, late November winds in order to help someone else.

These were people who participated in the Rotary Club of Gold Beach's fourth annual Turkey Trot. The event was a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) fun run to help stock the local food banks.

The run, which also included walkers, began at the Hospice building and proceeded north along Wedderburn Loop and Old Coast Road overlooking ocean vistas.

Nodding her head in affirmation when asked if it was cold while pinning race numbers on the backs of participants, organizer Becky Atherton rebuffed the temperature momentarily and said, "It's for a good cause. It's worth it!"

A nearby pickup truck's bed was stuffed with bags of canned goods. The food donations were the price of admission to take part in the event. Atherton said 400 pounds of food was gathered.

Wrapped in warm clothing, participants, varying in ages from 1 to those in their mid-80s "turkey-trotted" at their own pace. Some sprinted, some plodded, while still others- walked, talked, and laughed with friends. A few even brought along their dogs. There was an unnamed Elvis impersonator running as well.

Gold Beach resident Nancy Sorensen, flanked by family members, was ready to run. "This is awesome! It's great to get out and help the food banks."

Sorensen confesses to what others lining the route are conceding "And after Thanksgiving andhellip; I need to do some walking!"

When nearing the halfway point, Cole Grossen, 14, was asked if he was having fun.

"Sorta. My ankle is a little sore but I'll make it," Grossen said.

True to his word he finished in the middle of the pack.
