CandK sends prescriptions to Rite-Aid

With Chetco Pharmacy and Gifts in Brookings and Pharmacy Express in Harbor slated to close on Nov. 14, many customers are wondering what will happen to their prescriptions.

Prescriptions from both pharmacies will be transferred to Rite-Aid in Harbor unless other arrangements are made, representatives at both stores said Friday.

Customers who want to shift their prescriptions to another pharmacy should contact the pharmacy of their choice to transfer the prescription.

According to a press release from CandK Market Inc., "customer prescriptions will be transferred to the buyers with the goal of making the transfer as seamless as possible.

Brookings-based CandK Market announced Oct. 21 that it was selling its 15 pharmacy properties in an effort to focus on its grocery stores. CandK operates 60 grocery stores in Oregon and California under the names Shop Smart and Ray's Food Place. The company closed four grocery stores this year in Walterville, Crescent City, Smith River and Yreka, saying the stores were no longer profitable.

As a general practice, when a pharmacy closes, its records have to go somewhere or customers would have no way to fill their prescriptions, said Jennifer Davis, president of the Oregon State Pharmacy Association.

She said selling the records ensures that customers can get their prescriptions without having to go back to a physician to obtain another prescription. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, she said, allows medical records to be shared between two medical professionals. It's up to the company that buys the prescription files to notify customers, she said.
