Brookings man dies in car crash

A Brookings resident was killed and another critically injured when the car they were driving crashed Thursday night on South Bank Chetco River Road.

The passenger, Axel Dunn, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Bradley Cupp, 28, was in critical condition and airlifted to Oregon State University Hospital in Portland.

Authorities received a 911 call at 11:47 p.m. from a resident reporting what sounded like a motorcycle or vehicle accident at milepost 2, according to Curry County Sheriff's Lt. John Ward.

The caller said the car was heading down river at a high rate of speed before it crashed, Ward said.

Harbor Fire Department personnel and a Cal-Ore Life Flight ambulance crew responded to the incident and found the vehicle, a 1995 Honda Civic, over an embankment. The two men were trapped inside.

A tow truck at the scene was used to haul the vehicle up to road where firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free Cupp and Dunn from the car. Cupp was transported to Curry General Hospital, where he was treated and then airlifted to the Portland hospital.

On Friday, Cupp was listed in critical condition.

The initial investigation determined that speeding and alcohol may have been a factor in the accident, Ward said.

The Curry County Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation into the cause, he said. A Salem-based accident reconstruction expert from the Oregon State Police was expected to be at the scene Friday afternoon.

Dunn's next of kin have been notified and an autopsy has been scheduled, Ward said.
