The body of Harlen Wade Smith, 23, was found Sunday afternoon in the water by the commercial docks in the Port of Brookings Harbor. Smith had been missing since Sept. 22.
The Coast Guard retrieved the body from the water after it had been found floating near a commercial fishing vessel. Sheriff's deputies confirmed it was Smith and notified the next of kin on Sunday evening.
Lt. John Ward of the Curry County Sheriff's Office said there appeared to be no foul play involved, but that an autopsy would be performed.
Smith, who attended Brookings-Harbor High School, worked as a commercial fisherman out of the port. According to the sheriff's department, he had last been seen drinking with friends the night of Sept. 22. That night, the Coast Guard received calls of voices and splashing in the water near the icehouse at the port. Smith's shoe was found that night near the icehouse.
Several efforts were made to find Smith: Divers from Lakeside Fire Department searched the docks on Sept. 25; the Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue made an extensive search on jet skis on Sept. 28.
