Brookings residents line up around the block at the Chetco Community Library on Thursday to buy books in every genre to support the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.
"We usually have a line out the door," said Tony Parrish, president of Friends of the Library. "This place is packed."
Parrish has been involved with the book sale for the past 23 years and said that the sale changes every year with different categories. He said that certain categories, such as VHS tapes and encyclopedias sold better in the past, but with current technology, those volumes are not selling as well.
The library hopes to sell more than 20,000 books this weekend - and next week with the opening of the library annex book store.
Each book costs $1, and there will be a bag sale from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, where a full grocery bag of books will cost $2.
Parrish said the goal for the book sale this weekend is $7,000. The new library annex book store, located at 402 Alder St., will open on Tuesday, and Parrish hopes to earn more than $3,000 in the first week there. The library has a large storage room that is filled with boxes of books, giving residents a variety of books to choose from throughout the week.
"We are selling every book for a buck apiece and 10 to 20 is a good average per person," Parrish said. "We give great deals here.
Money the Friends of the Library raises goes in the general fund of the Chetco Community Library to support programs that they offer throughout the year.
"It allows us to do some of the children's programs and stuff that normally wouldn't be high priority on the budget," Parrish said.
Brookings resident and book buyer Gro Lent has been to about 30 book sales at the library.
"I always come because I look for books that have been recommended by somebody that I know," Lent said. "I also have books that I give away that I am particularly fond of so I always look for books that are special to me."
Hours for the book sale are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today (May 25) and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 26. Annex hours next week are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
