Director Gary DeRoest will lead the Curry/Del Norte Orchestra in a series of three classical concerts at Gold Beach, Crescent City and Brookings, April 27, 29 and 29, respectively.
The orchestra's musicians are all residents who donate their time to bring live symphonic music to residents of the Wild Rivers Coast.
This concert lineup includes "Under the Double Eagle," by Josef Franz Wagner. Often called "The Austrian March King," Wagner wrote some 400 compositions, 250 of which have been published. The title of his most famous march, "Unter dem Doppeladler" (Under the Double Eagle) refers to the double eagle in the old coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Concert attendees will also enjoy "Ballet Egyptien" by Alexandre Luigini. Luigini was an Italian violinist, conductor and composer. "Ballet Egyptien" is his best-known work and is frequently performed as a concert suite.
Selections also include Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" (from Act II). This was Tchaikovsky's first ballet, written in response to a commission from the directors of the Imperial Theaters of Moscow and premiered at the Bolshoi Theater in 1877. Act II features the love theme that is the most closely related to the ballet. The orchestra will also be performing the "Carmen Symphony" by Georges Bizet. This version was re-orchestrated in 2004 by Jose Serebrier.
A highlight of this season's concerts is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Adagio for Violin and Orchestra," featuring violin soloist Jenna Barvitski. Holding a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance with a minor in piano performance from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, Barvitski has played with many orchestras, including the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, and the South Florida Symphony Orchestra.
She is currently serving in AmeriCorps as a mentor at Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods in Crescent City.
