The Wednesday Farmers Market at the Grange opened its doors on Wednesday, March 27, reminding Brookings residents that spring has arrived.
The farmers market will now be running year-round from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Chetco Grange Community Center, 97895 Shopping Center Ave. When weather is nice, vendors will be outside and when rain persists, vendors will be moved indoors. The vendors may change weekly, but one thing stays the same - shopping at the market means supporting local businesses.
Willow Owings, a repeat shopper at the market, enjoys eating healthy and prefers to shop locally whenever possible. "I try to plan my shopping on Wednesdays and start here before going elsewhere," she said.
With a variety of vendor choices throughout the summer, the multiple stop shopping may be less for some Brookings residents.
According to Linda Stimson, farmers market coordinator, there are 22 different vendors scheduled to showcase their products this year. Products currently range from goat cheese, salsa and fresh ground coffee to homemade quilts, glitter tattoos and colorful artwork.
"It's different every week because I don't always have the same vendors," Stimson said. "It has grown from a few vendors to not enough room for everybody."
Upcoming vendors may offer seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, bratwurst, barbecue sauce, toffee, organic food and more. Stimson hopes to have musical talent to entertain the shoppers during the summer hours as well.
Bonnie Wilson, a vendor who sells pictures turned into greeting cards, feels that supporting local businesses is very important. She tries to shop local, even if it means making more than one stop to do it.
"Small business vendors in this area need to support one another," Wilson said. "You can always find stuff here, you just have to look."
Wilson looks forward to the different vendors that may be her neighbors at the market throughout this year.
"Everyone has a talent and everyone gets to shine here," Wilson said.
