Runway safety and passenger terminal improvements at Del Norte County Airport got a small boost this week as projects funded through grants administered by the City of Brookings neared completion.

Brookings received $40,032 in grant funding through the Connect Oregon program, which has been used to fund a variety of studies at the airport in Crescent City, including an environmental assessment for the proposed new terminal, preliminary design work for a runway safety project and a wildlife hazard assessment study.

"We are pleased to have partnered with the Boarder Coast Regional Airport Authority on these projects," said City Manager Gary Milliman. "Improvements to (the airport) will benefit Brookings residents who use the airport, and will further enhance the capacity of the airport for expanded passenger and freight service."

Brookings has been a member of the Airport Authority since 2008, and was the first non-California participant.

"We have been pleased to be a partner in this important endeavor," Milliman said.

The $40,032 grant was the first time Connect Oregon funds, administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), have been used to assist an airport project outside the state.

"We plan to seek additional Connect Oregon funding to assist with the actual construction of the new terminal and runway improvements," Milliman said.
