The Lady Bruins basketball team is on its way to the state playoffs after an exciting 55-26 victory tonight (Feb. 23) over Yamhill-Carlton.

Both teams started the game aggressively, with Brookings chalking up 7 fouls and Yamhill with 10 by halftime. The score was an even 15-15.

In the third and fourth quarters, stamina and patience paid off as the Lady Bruins' defense put the pressure on and the offense stuck to the playbook and systematically wore down their opponents with non-stop scoring.

By the end of the third period, the Bruins had a commanding 29-20. The Bruins owned the fourth quarter as the team's consistent passing and drives on the net netted another 26 points to Yamhill's 6 points.

The Bruins' Iva Hart led the team with a total of 12 points, followed by Cassie Vaught's9 points (all 3-pointers in the second half). Mallory McDonald sank 8 points before an injury sent her to the bench permanently in the third quarter. Courtney Kay scored 5 points and also executed three or four crucial steals during the game.

The Bruins will travel to Cottage Grove next Friday or Saturday.
