Soroptimist International of Brookings celebrated its 55th birthday with a potluck and auction Saturday at the Driftwood Estates Mobile Home Park community room.

The potluck featured a variety of foods, salads, finger foods and desserts. About 25 members and guests were present to take part in the Japanese auction that followed.

The Brookings group has a sister club in Japan that, each year, sends a variety of items from the Far East. The local club in turn send the Japanese group items preferably made in the United States as well as items made by local artisans.

President Pat Shurtleff read a thank you letter from the president of the club in Japan that expressed appreciation for the Brookings club's support.

Karen Dagenais auctioned off a variety of items to numerous to name, including kimonos, baskets and a chess set.

Herb Hedgpeth, who guessed the amount in the piggy, won the prize. The piggy is a bank where club members put fines and bragging fees. Whenever there is a special event, such as the birthday party, those in attendance guess the amount collected. The one closest gets a gift.

The room set-up was done by Dagenais, Judith Faulstick and Carol Slewing.

On display were quilted blankets and burp bibs for the baby shower coming in March. This program is to acquire items for babies and put in boxes in the event a mother has a child and has no means to acquire the necessary items needed to get started with a newborn. The club has also helped with older children.

Also available were tickets for a special Soroptimist presentation of the upcoming play "Holy Cannoli" on Feb. 14. The club is offering a Valentine's night out with a dinner and a show. Contact Teresa at Tangles Salon Brookings for tickets or more information.
