Quilt raffle benefits food bank

Country Keepsakes Quilt Shop will raffle off two quilts at the end of December to support the Brookings-Harbor Community Helpers Food Bank.

Both are rail fence quilts, 87 inches by 114 inches, in earth tones. One has a green border, the other a milk-chocolate brown.

"We've seen other cities do this to help, so we thought 'We can do it,'" co-owner Laurie Mitts said.

To purchase raffle tickets, people can stop by the store, located at 800 Chetco Ave. with food or monetary donations. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5 or one ticket for three items of food. They are on sale now until 12 p.m. Dec. 23, the time of the drawing. People can pick which quilt they want to put their tickets toward.

The quilts were made by 50 women from Oregon, California, Washington and Arizona who assembled 12.5 inch blocks.

This is the second year that the raffle is being held. Last year, the shop collected about 900 pounds of food and more than $1,000.

"We want to increase that each year," Mitts said. "That's our goal."
