Signing up for the school year

Students and parents were busy filling out forms. They were updating contact information and picking up important paperwork andndash; class schedules, locker combinations, school calendars and picture day and free and reduced lunch forms andndash; Wednesday and Thursday at Kalmiopsis Elementary School, Azalea Middle School and Brookings-Harbor High School. Registration was under way.

"It's been pretty good," Kalmiopsis Elementary School Dean of Students David Lee said. "We've had a lot of people coming in and volunteering. Everything's been pretty smooth."

Volunteers at Kalmiopsis, Azalea Middle School and Brookings-Harbor High School included teachers, staff, parents, booster clubs and service organizations such as the Soroptimists International of Brookings.

Everything went well at Azalea and BHHS, too.

"We had a lot of people come through," Azalea Principal Sheryl Lipski said. "So far, 13 new students, so we're very excited about that. It's just been going really smoothly."

Smooth was the key word for BHHS office manager Molly Wales as well.

"Lots of new students. It's always fun seeing the returning ones as well," she said.

As of Friday, the registration count at Kalmiopsis was 650 students, with 46 new students, Lee said.

At Azalea, 381 with 18 new students; and 553 with at least 20 new students expected at BHHS.

However, the final numbers won't be available until school starts.

The numbers at Azalea and BHHS are very similar to last year. At Kalmiopsis, they are a little lower compared to last year's school registration.

"It's just really exciting to see everybody, and have everybody come back," Lipski said.

On the first day of school, Sept. 4, parents and students will see new paint, new faces and a new play structure.

Quite a few maintenance projects were completed this summer. A major portion of BHHS was reroofed, dry rot and siding was repaired at Kalmiopsis and BHHS, the floors at Kalmiopsis and Azalea were stripped, painting was done, the gray walls in the Azalea gym were redone, carpet at BHHS and Kalmiopsis was replaced and pot holes in the transportation lot and driveway were repaired.

About 14 new staff members andndash; teachers of math, science, language arts and life skills; custodians; a transportation supervisor; a special education director; and a new athletic director/dean of students will be present as well.

Finally, Kalmiopsis's new play structure has arrived, and will be assembled soon.
