Brookings Harbor Community Theater is taking audiences on an underwater adventure by staging Disney's "The Little Mermaid Jr."
The hour-long abridged version is based on the 1989 animated feature film and the 2008 Broadway production.
The production features 35 children split between two casts. Director Dori Blodgett divided the actors to best display their talents.
"This way we have two of each character andndash; two Ariels, Scuttles, Flounders and all of your favorite Little Mermaid characters." They are referred to as Cast A and Cast B.
The play is the story of Ariel (Cast A, Breezy Harvey; Cast B, Michaela George), the mermaid princess, who longs to join the human world. Along with her best fish friend Flounder (Cecilia Lynn, Dylan Speir), she collects human artifacts and goes to the surface of the ocean to visit the seagull Scuttle (Ashanti Franks, Alia Graves), who offers wildly inaccurate information about humans.
Ignoring her father, King Triton (Ivan Mann, Dylan Cuthbertson), and his adviser, the red crab Sebastian (Denny Harvey, Josiah Wise), who warn that contact between merpeople and humans is forbidden, Ariel travels to the ocean surface to see a birthday celebration for Prince Eric (Daniel Pearson, Dylan Panter). When a storm destroys the ship, Ariel saves andndash; and sings andndash; to the unconscious prince, fleeing before he regains consciousness. Driven by the memory of her voice, Eric vows to track down his savior, as Ariel seeks a way to join him and his world.
"She trades her voice to the sea witch, Ursula (Shawntisha Bailey, Mariah Wise), so she can be human and walk on land," Blodgett said, "but she only has three days to make the prince fall in love with her or she becomes the sea witch's slave and has to go back under the sea."
The musical includes three songs from the Broadway version andndash; the seagulls' "Human Stuff," Ariel's sisters' "She's in Love" and Prince Eric's "One Step Closer." The popular songs from the animated film are also featured, including "Part of Your World" and "Under the Sea."
