Committee to consider officials' salaries

Charles Kocher, Pilot staff writer

GOLD BEACH andndash; The Elected Officials Compensation Board will hold their

second meeting at 10:30 a.m. today (May 2) as they consider what salary

levels to recommend for county commissioners and other elected county

officials.

At their first meeting, County Counsel Jerry Herbage told that board,

made up of lay members of the County Budget Committee, their sole role

is to make a recommendation to the county commissioners who ultimately

set the salaries.

John Spicer suggested the commissioners' salaries should be in line with

other similar counties. He had a survey of 15 counties that had

approximately the same number of employees as Curry.

"We're higher than some, lower than some," he said.

Tom Brand said he was not so much interested in what other counties have

been paying their officials as what the trends are this year.

"I think we will find it easier to come to a decision if we find out what others are doing," he said.

Spicer said that the commissioners' jobs will change because they are spinning off employees.

Commissioners are currently trying to spin off Public Health and Human Services to nonprofit groups.

"We are only talking about eight people," Sam Scaffo said. "We are not going to make a large change in the budget."

Last year, the Budget Committee voted unanimously to cut county

commissioners' pay by 3 percent but leave other elected officials'

salaries the same as they currently received.

The last time elected officials received a raise was in the 2009-10 fiscal year.

Then the raises were primarily 3 percent cost-of-living increases.

That budget gave the three commissioners a salary of $62,592 for fiscal

year 2010, including a COLA of $1,823. The assessor received a $1,657

COLA and $463 raise for a total of $57,366. The county clerk received a

$1,648 COLA and $191 raise for a total of $56,773. The sheriff a $1,970

COLA, $1,642 raise for $69,265. Surveyor a $1,603 COLA for a total of

$55,028 and treasurer $1,638 COLA for $56,248.
