It wasn't enough for Relay for Life supporters to reach their goal of $46,000; they had to keep going.

As of Friday, the local drive has gathered $54,400, according to Rhonda Gardenheir, event chair. Fundraising will continue through Aug. 31 and the amount is expected to grow.

The goal was reached and exceeded through the fundraising efforts of 14 "very busy Relay teams and our community supporters. Six of those 14 teams were brand new to Relay for Life," Gardenheir said.

Teams topping the fundraising were CandK Markets raising $6,758, followed by First Baptist Community Church garnering $5,462 and Fred Meyer contributing $4,682.

Topping the individual fundraising efforts were Gardenheir, Matt Olsen and Melody Wells.

Relay for Life fundraising began in January. Not only did each team help raise funds for the American Cancer Society, but community events contributed to the total. These included a basketball game, Trivia Night, Curbing for a Cure, the Azalea Festival parade and tips from Dutch Bros. Relay Day.

Fundraising events were capped by the Relay for Life event July 8 and 9 at Elmer Bankus Stadium at Brookings-Harbor High School.

The all-night relay began when cancer survivors took the first lap around the track. Many of the survivors were local, but one woman, Carla Erb, traveled to Brookings from Boston to participate, Gardenheir said.

After the survivor lap, team members took turns carrying a baton around the track until 9 in the morning.

Sam Dotson walked more laps than any other person, Gardenheir said. He walked 80 laps, or 20 miles.

During the night, teams were treated to live and disc jockey music, competitions and other events.

Not only did CandK Markets raise the most money, but the team also won the award for best campsite.

Winning the award for best costumes was Katelyn's Krew and the best-decorated baton was won by Susie Q's. The Spirit Award was given to Sutter Coast Health Center.

Donations to Relay for Life, which benefit the American Cancer Society, are still being accepted. For information, contact Gardenheir at 541-661-2317 or curryrelay@frontier.com.
