With approximately 70 participants in attendance, planners said they are looking forward to the support for this year's relay.
The meeting room, decorated with colorful balloons, was filled with
energy, laughter, applause and music. In addition, there was wine
tasting, finger foods and candies.
Amid the fun, some serious business took place to advance the fight against cancer.
Rhonda Gardenheir, chair of the 2011 Curry Relay for Life, announced goals for this year's event, scheduled for July 8 and 9 at the Brookings-Harbor High School football field.
One of the goals is to raise $46,000, and to have 120 participants in the survivors' lap.
Gardenheir said that the goal to have 16 participating teams has already topped 50 percent of the goal, with 10 teams already registered.
"We raised $42,000 last year with only 10 teams," Gardenheir said. "With 16 teams, we should easily reach this year's goal."
Gardenheir and other organizers said they'd like to encourage those who've never participated in the event to join a team and have a grand time with friends and neighbors while helping in the fight against cancer.
Past participants have said it's a great experience to spend the night among a cluster of decorated tents while taking turns keeping the team's ornately decorated baton on a continuous journey around the track andndash; not to mention enjoying the music, festivities, and food. That, plus helping such a worthy cause, inspires many people to return year after year, Gardenheir said.
She and her team are especially grateful to the 42 corporate sponsors that are supporting the Relay for Life, she said.
The American Cancer Society (ACS) advertises it as a "life-changing event that gives everyone in the community a chance to celebrate the lives of those loved ones who have battled cancer."
It is also the largest fund-raising event in the world aimed at finding a cure for a disease that affects millions of lives.
